STRANGE CRASH TEST - 1959 CHEVY BELAIR vs 2009 CHEVY MALIBU
Crash test: 1959 Chevy versus 2009 Chevy
To demonstrate the advances in motor vehicle safety over the last 50 years, and to celebrate its 50th anniversary, America's Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted a unique crash test using a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air.
Both cars are traveling at 64km/h (40mph) and collide in an offset manner, driver side to driver side. This is the same crash configuration represented by the institute's 40mph frontal offset barrier test, which, in America, is used to rate the frontal crash performance of new cars.
As you can see by the pictures, the passenger cell of the Bel Air is heavily crushed, with the windscreen flying out, while the modern Malibu's stays pretty much intact.
